We are halfway to our goal of resurfacing the Miller Park Tennis/Pickleball courts! These courts have gained popularity across a wide age range in our community and after decades of use, they are in desperate need of an upgrade!
Project Overview:
Two tennis courts were initially installed at Miller Park in 1980, and were given a band-aid fix approximately 8-10 years ago when a sports surface with two tennis & one pickleball court was added over the concrete. The current condition of the courts poses safety concerns, with dead spots, cracks, and slick during damp conditions. Recognizing the community's request for well-maintained facilities and additional pickleball courts to maximize usage, our project focuses on creating a safe environment for increased recreational activities.
Project Details:
Court Refurbishment: The initiative includes pulling up the old surface, fixing the concrete underneath, and resurfacing the courts to eliminate safety hazards and enhance the quality of play.
New Pickleball Courts: In response to the growing popularity of pickleball, we aim to add three additional courts to accommodate the increasing demand, totaling 2 tennis courts and 4 pickleball courts.
Estimated Project Cost: $40,000
Timeline: Dependent on fundraising efforts. Our goal is to raise all required funds by Fall of 2024 and break ground either in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025.
Impact: Parks and Recreation will continue to offer its tennis program and plans to expand its pickleball program, offering classes for kids, adults, and seniors. Eliminating safety hazards and adding additional courts will encourage the community to engage more actively in these recreational activities, fostering a healthier and more vibrant environment for all ages.
Why Your Support Matters:
This project is not included in Polk City's 5-year Capital Improvement Plan, so it is not budgeted for resurfacing through public taxes. The Polk City Friends of the Parks aims to bridge this gap by securing funding through a combination of grants, corporate donations, fundraising events, and community contributions. The City is aware and supportive of our goal and plan for this project.
Fundraising Initiatives:
Corporate Asks: Our Board is actively seeking corporate contributions.
Grants: Our board applied for funding from the Polk County Community Grant.
Spring Fundraiser: All funds from our April 20th Earth Day 5k & Pickleball Tournament went to this project.
Four Seasons Festival: On July 20th, the Lakeside Fellowship Church will host and sponsor a Pickleball Tournament on the square, raising awareness for the sport and additional donations. Our Friends board will host games in the beer garden during the evening's live music breaks on July 19th and 20th.
Summer Fundraiser: Party in the Park held in August at Miller Park will feature a free-will donation dinner, games, and a pickelball tournament, with proceeds directed to the project.
Community Donations: Individuals can donate directly on our website or in person at events / at weekly farmer's markets in the Summer.
We would love your help supporting this project that directly enhances recreational opportunities in our growing community. Your contribution will play a vital role in making these improvements a reality.
Thank you for considering our project! Please reach out with any questions you may have.
